The price of GTA VI is and will probably continue to be a hot topic with fans of the franchise until there’s a concrete cost confirmed by Rockstar. This is partly due to the fact that Nintendo has released games like Mario Kart World at $80 for the Nintendo Switch 2. This caused questions to arise about other upcoming games and whether or not this would become the new normal.
The situation wasn’t helped when Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford chimed in on X. Pitchford made comments about real fans finding a way to “make it happen” if they really wanted to play a game. Even if it came with a higher price tag. Luckily, Gearbox’s upcoming title, Borderlands 4, will not cost $80. With regard to GTA VI, concerns have manifested that it might cost $100 for the base version of the game. However, this is unlikely according to a recent report.
The GTA VI price could be $80, but probably won’t be $100
In a recent report from Wccftech, it was mentioned that one particular analyst has predicted that Rockstar could easily charge $100 for GTA VI. Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities believes that Rockstar could get away with charging this higher price. However, Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliot believes this won’t be the case.
There are a few reasons mentioned why they think this wouldn’t work out. Not the least of which is that it wouldn’t be a smart business decision. Charging $100 upfront for the standard version of the game would make Rockstar more money in the beginning. As it’s pointed out, however, the longevity of GTA games like GTA V comes from GTA Online. GTA Online’s continued live service revenue stream is what keeps players coming back to play.
If Rockstar charged $100 for a standard version, there are likely to be a lot of players who might choose to skip the entry at launch. This could end up hurting GTA VI sales in the long run. Another reason mentioned is that Rockstar needs to ensure that players make the jump from GTA Online to playing GTA VI and its inevitable online mode. This will be harder to do if the game costs $100.
Players are already up in arms over $80 games
Players already despise the concept of paying $80 for the standard versions of games. It seems unlikely that a large majority of the gaming community would sit back and just let companies begin charging $100 without making noise. That would inevitably cause backlash from gamers, something that Rockstar definitely doesn’t want. So, to sum things up, Rockstar certainly could charge $100 for GTA VI and get away with it in the short term. In the long term, it just doesn’t make much sense. Not if Rockstar wants to keep players around.
