The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a legendary phone in Samsung‘s extensive catalog. It was the device that introduced the “Ultra” name to the Galaxy S family. It surprised everyone in its day with its powerful specifications, especially its 200MP main camera, a milestone for its time. That said, the software support period for the handset had already ended. However, Samsung has surprised Galaxy S20 Ultra users with what is likely to be the last update outside of the promised support period.
For years, Samsung has been one of the most committed companies when it comes to offering updates for all its devices. The South Korean giant is only behind Google in this regard. However, Samsung’s case is even more commendable since it has a much broader range of phones. Currently, even affordable devices, like the Galaxy A16, boast up to six years of software updates. This is more than other brands offer, even for their flagship phones.
One last—and unexpected—update for Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Ultra
Turning to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, its latest update is a security patch. This comes months after officially ending software updates for the Galaxy S20 series. More specifically, the official support period ended in April of this year. The S20 Ultra was born in an era (2020) when Samsung offered a maximum of four years of major OS updates and five years of security updates to its flagship devices. This update policy is attractive even today, so it was well ahead of its time.
The update brings the July 2025 security patch to the 2020 flagship phone. For now, the rollout appears to be limited to models on the Verizon network, but it’s a good sign that a wider release could follow in the coming days. The update itself isn’t a major OS overhaul but rather a targeted security patch to address recently discovered vulnerabilities. This is totally normal for an update of this style for such an old phone, though.
Have you already upgraded?
While this new update is a great bonus, it’s important to remember that the Galaxy S20’s official support has still ended. While this patch offers a temporary boost in security, the phones will remain vulnerable to future flaws. For those who want to be fully protected and take advantage of Samsung’s even longer new support policy (up to seven years of updates), a newer model like the Galaxy S25 lineup might be a good next step. But for now, S20 owners can enjoy this unexpected encore from Samsung.
