For new owners of Samsung’s latest smartwatches, a software update is a welcome sight. Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 8 series in July alongside its latest foldable phones, in addition to a “refreshed” Galaxy Watch Ultra due in 2025. Now, the company has begun rolling out the first official software update for the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic.
This software release aims primarily at fine-tuning the user experience right out of the box. As is common with new devices, this initial update focuses primarily on bug fixes and system stability.
Samsung rolls out the first update for the Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic
This new update comes with firmware version ending in AYG4. The file is a download of approximately 164MB for both the Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is also receiving its own update, tho. In this case, we are talking about a slightly different firmware version (ending in BYG4) and a download size of around 158MB.
While this first update is a good sign for new users, it’s worth noting a key detail: none of these new smartwatches have received the August 2025 security patch yet. Instead, all three devices are still running on the May 2025 security patch. This isn’t a major cause for concern, but it does mean a more substantial security update will likely be coming down the pipeline in the near future. It is normal that Samsung is faster in sending security updates to its Galaxy phones than to other products.
First in South Korea
Currently, the rollout is limited to South Korea. But this is a good indication that the global release will be following shortly. If you’ve just purchased one of these new smartwatches, you can keep an eye out for a notification on your phone. To manually check for the update, simply open the Galaxy Wearable app, navigate to your watch’s settings, and then go to “Watch software update” to see if it’s ready to download and install.
Both the Galaxy Watch 8 series and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025 are already quite feature packed. However, if you were hoping for an update with new features, you’ll probably have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime, these watches are the first to let us experience firsthand everything Wear OS 6 has to offer, in addition to Samsung’s own features integrated into One UI 8 for Watch.
