Google’s Material 3 Expressive is on a roll as it expands to more apps. The latest one to get the taste of it is the Google Phone app. This comes after the redesign was made available to a limited number of users, possibly beta testers, in June. The new look is now more widely available, reportedly on stable Android 16 as well as the latest QPR1 beta.
Google Phone Material 3 Expressive redesign is here
The update brings a visual overhaul to the Phone app. The contact photos now appear inside an animated circle-ish shape during calls. The Favorites button has been moved to a drop-down at the top of the Recents view. The Recents tab has a menu at the top to filter your call history. It has the options for Missed, Contacts, Non-spam, Spam, and All. The navigation menu has Recents, Contacts, and Voicemail buttons.

Google is offering you two ways to deal with incoming calls. You can either tap answer or decline buttons to respond to calls, or a horizontal swipe gesture. The company is moving away from the aged vertical swipe method as it’s prone to registering accidental inputs while pulling the phone out of the pocket. Other Google Phone Material 3 Expressive changes to the UI include more rounded corners, contrasting background colours, and pill-shaped buttons.
Google Phone app’s Navigation Menu update
9to5Google reports that there seems to be a new navigation menu update to the Google Phone app for Android, possibly limited to some beta testers. It reportedly has the app version number 185. This renames the Recent Tab in the navigation menu to ‘Home’. The dialer FAB (floating action button) is now a ‘Keypad’ button within the navigation menu.

These changes to the navigation menu don’t seem to be widely available at the moment. Hopefully, the changes arrive in one go.
