The Volvo 240 was introduced in the summer of 1974 and offered as a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a practical five-door wagon. The ‘brick’ was a huge hit and the automaker made 2,685,171 cars between 1974 and 1993.
While the final car rolled off the assembly line in Gothenburg over 32 years ago, it’s finally been surpassed by the XC60. Volvo says over 2.7 million crossovers have been sold since its launch in 2008, making it the best-selling Volvo of all time.

In many ways, the XC60 is a successor to the 240 Estate as both offer a Scandinavian design and plenty of space for people or gear. While the brand still offers wagons, the company acknowledged “the SUV has replaced the estate as the obvious family pick.” They went on to note the popularity of the XC60 “clearly reflects this shift in what customers want and need. “
A number of us likely have fond memories of the 240 and Volvo’s Susanne Hägglund noted you could spot one in almost every driveway in Sweden during the 1980’s. However, she said “the XC60 has taken over that position in two ways. While the second-generation XC60 debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, a facelift was introduced for 2026. It features an updated interior with new cup holders, an improved wireless smartphone charger, and a larger 11.2-inch infotainment system. They’re joined by new trim and upholstery options.
Exterior changes are more subtle, but include a revamped grille with diagonal lines. Buyers will also find updated wheels and darker taillights.
