Under-display cameras were supposed to be a big thing. Unfortunately, the tech we have right now isn’t perfect yet. Many photos taken with under-display cameras don’t look as good compared to regular cameras. This is why Apple has held off for so long and continued to employ a notch/cutout on its iPhones. However, thanks to new mockups, we might have an idea of what the iPhone 18 Pro display could look like.
iPhone 18 Pro display with cutouts
In a series of posts on X by developer Filip Vabrousek, he shared some mockups of the iPhone 18 Pro display based on rumors we’ve heard so far. One of those rumors, which came from a report from The Information, suggests we could be looking at a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera. The report also claims the camera is being moved to the top left corner of the screen.
The next render is based on DSCC Ross Young, who suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro could still use the Dynamic Island design, albeit smaller. It’s too early to tell which is accurate, but either way, both camps are suggesting Apple will make the cutout smaller compared to previous generations.
Apple has already shrunk Dynamic Island compared to when it first came out. However, it is still very obvious. Granted, long-time iPhone users probably don’t notice it as much anymore. Plus, it has the added benefit of displaying useful information. So, even though it might be an eyesore to some, it is functional.
Changes coming to iPhone 18 and iPhone 19
For those wondering when Apple will ditch the notch for good, that will still be a few years coming. According to the rumors, Apple will do so in a few stages. This will start with the iPhone 18 Pro, where apparently, Apple will shift the Face ID camera system under the display.
Then for the iPhone 19, also known as Apple’s 20th iPhone anniversary, Apple will go with a full under-display camera setup. The handset is also rumored to undergo a massive redesign, potentially going full screen and will feature a mostly-glass design. In any case, these mockups are just a sneak peek of what’s to come, but which do you prefer? A hole-punch cutout or a smaller Dynamic Island?
