Remember when smartphones first came out and how huge the display bezels were? These days, the bezels are still present. However, technology has come a long way, and they’re a lot smaller than back then. But Apple has plans to go further. The company is rumored to be exploring the idea of an all-screen iPhone design, but it will go through multiple stages before happening.
An all-screen iPhone design
According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, he claims that Apple plans to debut an all-screen iPhone design eventually, but it won’t arrive immediately and will go through a few stages. Gurman was responding to a question on whether this year’s iPhone 17 models are considered a redesign.
Gurman confirmed it was, but suggested it was more of a tweak. He also says that it is a stepping stone towards next year’s upgrades. “That’s when Apple will shrink the Dynamic Island, moving closer to a screen that truly covers the entire front of the phone, and roll out a foldable model. More changes will come in 2027, as I’ve earlier reported, with a Pro model redesign tied to the iPhone’s 20-year anniversary.”
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about this. We previously heard about Apple’s plans for a massive redesign for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. The report claimed it would be a “mostly glass” design, suggesting that even the edges could be made of glass. In fact, Apple’s new iOS 26 redesign is supposed to be a teaser of sorts for the upcoming redesign.
We’re still a few years away from it, but as Gurman says, Apple is setting the foundation of what’s to come.
Upcoming changes
As Gurman says, Apple’s transition to an all-screen iPhone design will come in stages. There are already rumors to suggest that is happening. For starters, next year’s iPhone could see Apple shrink Dynamic Island. Currently, Dynamic Island houses Face ID’s TrueDepth camera system and the front-facing camera.
However, for the iPhone 18 series, Apple is rumored to go with an under-display Face ID. This means that Dynamic Island could shrink down to a hole-punch. Then, the following year, Apple will go with an under-display camera setup, ditching the hole-punch entirely. This will result in an all-screen iPhone. It remains to be seen if this will happen, so take it with a grain of salt.
