Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) is set to give remarks on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon to argue against the Trump administration’s “militarization” of Los Angeles following anti-deportation protests.
The speech comes less than a week after Padilla was escorted out of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference on the demonstrations. The Democratic senator was also briefly handcuffed.
His fellow Democrats came to his defense following the incident, as criticism mounts nationwide about President Trump’s immigration agenda and his decision to send thousands of National Guard troops and several hundred Marines to Los Angeles to quell the unrest.
Padilla’s remarks are scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
