Artificial intelligence is creeping into our everyday lives. Many products and services are launching today, and all use some form of AI. So, it’s no surprise that AI has the attention of military organizations worldwide. Now, it looks like OpenAI has secured a $200 million contract with the US Defense Department.
OpenAI’s defense contract
OpenAI has announced it has secured a $200 million contract with the US Defense Department. According to the AI company, it will work with the body to develop ways for AI to help with administrative tasks, such as getting health care for US military members, and boosting cybersecurity to prevent cyberattacks.
“We’re supporting the U.S. government’s efforts in adopting best-in-class technology and deploying these tools in service of the public good. Our goal is to unlock AI solutions that enhance the capabilities of government workers, help them cut down on the red tape and paperwork, and let them do more of what they come to work each day to do: serve the American people.”
The company also announced the creation of a new entity: OpenAI for Government. This consolidates all of OpenAI’s government projects under one company. This new contract with the Defense Department isn’t the first time OpenAI has toyed with the idea of using its tech for military use.
Back in 2024, OpenAI said it plans to work with Anduril Industries to develop AI for anti-drone systems. As we said, it’s not surprising that AI has caught the attention of the military. AI can help automate many tasks and is much more efficient than humans.
AI in the military
However, it is worrying because, unlike humans, AI cannot make certain types of distinctions. For example, Instagram users are complaining about a wave of mass bans despite the fact that many of these users claim their accounts and actions do not violate Instagram’s policies.
This led to speculation that AI might have been involved. Unlike human content moderators, AI usually sees things in black and white. This means that specific actions might have been taken out of context, leading to bans. This is why, while AI is more efficient, the lack of distinction could make it a dangerous tool where lives are concerned.
If anything, this makes AI regulation more important than ever, and the Trump administration’s proposed 10-year moratorium on state-level regulations could be a disaster waiting to happen.
