The 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon delivered a record-breaking $683 million economic impact to the Chicago metro area, according to a study by Jones & Associates Economics.
The total marks a 22% increase over 2023 and highlights the race’s growing global influence and local significance. The marathon drew nearly 53,000 participants and sparked a 130% increase in out-of-state attendance, leading to higher spending on hotels, dining, retail, and transportation. Tourism alone accounted for more than $177 million in activity tied directly to the race.
The marathon also supported 4,589 full-time jobs and generated $229 million in wages. In addition, runners raised a record $36 million for charitable causes. “Reaching nearly $700 million in impact, the marathon is one of Chicago’s most powerful engines for tourism and community pride,” said Kristen Reynolds, President & CEO of Choose Chicago.
“Each year, we are amazed by all the visitors and residents who pour into our community to generate impact for Chicago,” said Rita Cook, President, Bank of America Chicago.
