On June 9, 2025, Apple announced iOS 26. With the developer preview being available that same day. The public beta for iOS 26 will be available in July. But when is the iOS 26 release date?
Typically, Apple has released the next version of iOS the Monday after the iPhone announcement, which is typically the second week of September. So we expect that the iOS 26 release date will be the week of September 15 or the week of September 22, 2025.
iOS 26 has plenty of new-ness
Typically, iOS doesn’t get a lot of new features. Apple is able to fill out its features sheet with a ton of features because its apps are updated with the OS, unlike Android, where they can be updated through the Play Store at any time. However, this year is a big year for iOS.
Apple has redesigned iOS this year, and also jumped from iOS 18 to iOS 26. This is all part of unifying its platforms, using the same design language and also the same version number. Which, let’s be honest, makes it a lot easier to keep track of. Versus iOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11 and visionOS 3.
With this redesign, Apple is using a lot more glassy elements, including transparency and translucency. It’s arguably the biggest update since iOS 7 launched in 2013. Which had a lot of backlash, but we have a feeling this update won’t see as much backlash this time around.
iOS 26 will be available for the iPhone 11 and later, which launched in 2019. That’s pretty impressive for Apple, but not all that surprising. That means that the iPhone Xs family is getting the axe this year. It’ll still get some updates, but it will be stuck on iOS 18 forever.
