President Trump in an overnight social media post targeted “sleazebag” Democrats whom he accused of “playing the ref” with the Supreme Court on birthright citizenship hours after the nation’s highest court weighed arguments regarding judges’ ability to issue nationwide injunctions on the matter.
“The Radical Left SleazeBags, which has no cards remaining in its illegal bag of tricks, is, in a very coordinated manner, PLAYING THE REF with regard to the United States Supreme Court. They lost the Election in a landslide, and with it, have totally lost their confidence and reason,” Trump wrote on Truth Social during his trip to the Middle East.
The president added that Democrats are “stone cold CRAZY!”
“I hope the Supreme Court doesn’t fall for the games they play. The people are with us in bigger numbers than ever before. They want to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
On Thursday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Trump administration’s effort to end birthright citizenship. Trump signed an executive order on Jan. 20 that would bar children born in the United States from becoming citizens if their parents are not citizens or permanent residents.
His administration has pushed to rein in nationwide injunctions and the conservative justices on the Supreme Court’s bench questioned the need for them.
“So, we survived until the 1960s without universal injunctions,” Justice Clarence Thomas said on Thursday.
“That’s exactly correct,” said Solicitor General D. John Sauer in response. “And in fact, those are very limited and very rare, even in the 1960s. It really exploded in 2007.”
Sauer said that there have been 40 injunctions issued by judges since Trump’s second term started.
The liberal justices on the court stood in defense of countrywide injunctions.
“Does every single person that is affected by this EO [executive order] have to bring their own suit?” Justice Elena Kagan asked. “Are there alternatives? How long does it take?”
