If you turn back the clock just about six decades, you’d find yourself at the very beginning of the golden age of the classic muscle car in the US. With the introduction of the Pontiac GTO – the model many consider to be the first “true” muscle car – nearly every other American automaker was keen to jump on the muscle-car bandwagon. The muscle car’s recipe was simple: shoehorn a big, powerful motor into a mid-sized car and keep it relatively lightweight. Today, with all the fast Dodges like the Challenger and Charger gone, along with the Chevy Camaro, precious few muscle cars remain, though the Ford Mustang is still going strong. The more expensive mid-engined Chevy Corvette is closer to a supercar nowadays.
