Walk through your local shopping mall lot, and you’ll notice one design feature that’s very common among SUVs: that massive front grille. It could be the bold chrome facade of a Hyundai Palisade or the gaping maw of a Lexus RX, but one thing’s for certain, today’s SUV looks like it wants to inhale the road. Yet why should this be the case, and are some of these massive grilles really necessary? As it turns out, there are several ways to answer this question, and many answers have nothing to do with engineering.
