When the Audi Quattro was released in 1980, it ended up setting the automotive world on fire. At first glance, the 1980 Quattro wasn’t all that different from other models in the Audi Coupe lineup; it’s only when you learn what “Quattro” means that its fame begins to make sense. What Audi did was unleash the world’s first mass-market car with a permanent all-wheel-drive system that saw widespread production, something that had only been seen in motor racing before – and on a limited scale in cars from Jensen and Subaru. To this day, Audi’s quattro AWD system is available in all its cars, from the A3 to the A8 – and all the SUVs, naturally.
