Opening Google Maps on the iPhone Duo used to leave awkward black borders along the edges of both displays. The app simply stretched the old phone interface across the wider screens without adjusting the layout. That frustration is finally gone thanks to a silent update rolling out through the App Store.
Google released version 26.44.4 without adding detailed patch notes beyond a standard mention of bug fixes. Despite the quiet release, users will notice immediately that the map now stretches completely across both panels. The update replaces the previous 26.43.1 version, which left offset menus and empty margins near the status bar.
Full display layout changes map navigation
Opening the foldable device now triggers a wide interface that looks and acts much like Google Maps on an iPad. Menus for searching, exploring, and saving locations stay organized in a dedicated column along the left side. The actual map view fills the rest of the display from corner to corner, according to testing by Apple Insider.
Street View gets a major upgrade on the inner display by adopting a side-by-side view automatically. Looking around a neighborhood opens panoramic imagery on the left screen while keeping the live map active on the right. Closing the phone shifts Street View to the outer cover display, where a single tap returns you to the main map.
More developers adapt apps for dual displays
Google joins a growing list of major software makers updating their iOS apps for Apple‘s foldable device. Other popular apps like Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote recently added custom dual-screen support. Seeing big tech companies rebuild their mobile interfaces makes the foldable hardware far more practical for daily use.
Getting extra screen real estate makes a real difference when checking complex driving directions on the go. Clean side menus and side-by-side view options show how software can take real advantage of dual-screen designs. Anyone using Google Maps on the iPhone Duo can finally enjoy a layout built for their screen size.
