If you open up the Gemini app right now on your Android device, there’s no default option for whether you want to chat with Gemini or give it a task to complete. You simply launch the app, and then down at the bottom, just above the bar where you enter your prompt, there are two little buttons you can select that let you choose between chat and tasks, but you select this every single time you open the app.
The goal here is that users have the capability to choose what they want to do each time. It’s a change that Google added to the Gemini app just within the past few weeks, and now it seems like Google might be thinking about reverting this change and surprise, change things up yet again for an entirely different user interaction.
Gemini will let users choose a chat or task interaction as the default option
According to a new report from Android Authority, Google is already looking into the possibility of reverting the change it added just a few weeks back. Instead of having buttons for chat and task, and letting the user choose which one they want each time they open the app to start a prompt, Google is seemingly removing those.
In their place, Google will reportedly let users select a default option. So, users would choose chat, or task, and set that as their default. From then on, any time they open the Gemini app, it will be set to that option for prompts. In screenshots shared by Android Authority, the chat and task buttons are gone, and instead, the bar at the bottom just says “ask a question” or “describe a task.” These are the things it would say now when those buttons are selected, so that hasn’t changed. It’s not clear if Google will actually roll this out to all users, and if it does, when these changes will appear for everyone.
