With everything that’s happened in the 1,000+ lifetimes jammed into 2026, I think we’ve all been waiting for Gay Halloween to rehash the year in popular culture. A recently named phenomenon for the chronically online, Gay Halloween is best described as the costume-based valorization of specific media moments, however iconic, niche, or overlooked they may be.
Against the grain of sexy cat costumes and run-of-the-mill superheroes, those blessed with ✨ the vision ✨ devote their resources and talents to fashioning a high-commitment outfit about some bullshit like the hyperpigmentation meme or the disco testicles stage prop from Kacey Musgraves’s concert tour.

This year, I’ve noticed that a majority of Gay Halloween costumes pay homage to the real and fictional women carrying pop culture on their backs. That’s not to say that there haven’t been hat tips to the cyclosporiasis outbreak from Taylor Farms’s lettuce, the hidden death rumors that emerged from Mitch McConnell’s multi-week disappearance, or other 2026 happenings that were so absurd they became memes.
I’m just saying that for the most part, this year’s Gay Halloween appears to be heavily influenced by the staying power of iconic women and their enduring impact across fashion history, viral interview clips, cringeworthy plot points, salacious scandals, and diva-defined media personas. And it gets really specific, too.
