A day that we never thought would arrive has finally arrived. Today, Apple announced its first touchscreen MacBook in the overhauled MacBook Pro, which also brings OLED. This is the first time that a Mac has had an OLED display, which is a pretty big deal in itself.
Surprisingly, these new MacBook Pros don’t use the new M6 or M6 Pro chip; instead, they use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Technically, still a pretty powerful set of chips to choose from.
Apple officially calls these the “MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display,” and they start at $2,899. Apple said in an intro video that the new MacBook Pros feature a redesigned interface optimized for touch, while also being lighter.
“The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is a monumental step forward for the Mac,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer. “PROLED XDR is the world’s best laptop display. It pairs state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology with advanced algorithms in our display engine to deliver the kind of visual fidelity pros have been dreaming of. With the magic of Touch coming to MacBook Pro, combined with the game-changing performance of M5 Pro and M5 Max, we’ve created a whole new way for pros to interact with their content, taking their workflows to a new level. The new MacBook Pro is the result of the deep integration between Apple silicon, hardware, and software, and there’s simply nothing else like it.”

A $1,600 price increase to go from M5 Pro to M5 Max
The price difference between the M5 Pro and M5 Max is pretty incredible too. The M5 Max starts at $4,499. The M5 Pro is available for $2,899 with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, or you can upgrade to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU for $200 more. It also starts at 24GB of RAM, with an upgrade to 48GB for $600. The 14-inch model maxes out at 128GB, but only with the M5 Max, which brings the price to an eye-watering $7,099.
The base model does come with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, which is honestly not to bad, considering this is a $400 price increase and you are getting an OLED touchscreen as well.
Pre-orders for the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display start now, shipping on November 6. These join the already-announced iPad Mini with an OLED display and the MacBook Pro M6 announced earlier this week.
