It has been forever since Apple last disclosed how many iPhones it has sold. So when it comes to the “success” of a new model, that’s really anyone’s guess. But thanks to new data from Counterpoint Research, we have the sales estimates of the iPhone 18 Pro series. And based on that, it seems like it’s a mixed bag.
iPhone 18 Pro sales estimates are mixed
According to Counterpoint Research’s data, the sales estimates of the iPhone 18 Pro are mixed and don’t exactly paint it as a resounding success. This doesn’t mean the phone did badly. In fact, global sales grew 3.1% year-over-year compared to the iPhone 17 Pro series over the same post-launch period.
It also seemed to do quite well in China. The phones saw a 29% year-over-year increase in the country, but it seems that it had a bit of “outside” help in the form of local Chinese brands increasing their prices. This made the iPhone 18 Pro series a bit more attractive in comparison.
However, while the phones sold well in China, they didn’t do quite as well in the US and Japan. The report claims that sales in the US and Japan dropped. Apparently customers weren’t won over by the modest upgrades or Apple reusing the same design. In Japan, unfavorable exchange rates were another reason it didn’t sell so well.
Also, based on the numbers, the iPhone 18 Pro Max accounted for 56% of total series sales. This is actually a slight drop compared to 57% from its predecessor.
The iPhone Duo effect?
That being said, there’s a lot to like about the iPhone 18 Pro series. The new A20 Pro chipset built on the 2nm is a huge breakthrough. There are also improvements to battery life. Plus, the variable aperture camera is a game changer for some. However, compared to the iPhone Duo, it’s hard to deny which is the more exciting model.
Yes, the iPhone Duo is nearly double the price of the iPhone 18 Pro. But it is also the first new form factor we’ve seen in the iPhone since the phone was introduced. It’s also Apple’s first foldable. Based on how quickly the phone sold out, many customers seem to be more than happy to pay for it. But what do you think? Are the iPhone 18 Pro’s mixed sales a result of people being bored, or is it the iPhone Duo effect?
