Bugs are a common part of technology and software these days but that doesn’t make it any less of a blow to the stomach when a bug pops up on a piece of hardware like a $1,000+ Googlebook with an OLED panel display. There are reportedly cheaper Googlebooks coming, but the current models cost a significant amount. Recent reports have started to surface with some users claiming they have experienced issues with their Googlebook models that were showing black levels that appeared to be off, and Google had reportedly confirmed that this was indeed an issue that it was investigating.
This confirmation that this was a bug was peace of mind that it could be fixed, helping to soften the blow that black levels weren’t what they were supposed to be on this expensive laptop. Google has also now reported that a fix is underway.
The Googlebook OLED black level bug already has a fix being worked on
After acknowledging the bug in a dedicated Reddit thread about the issue, Google employee Mishaal Rahman has clarified that Google’s engineers have now figured out what the root cause of the issue was, and it is now working on a fix for it. Rahman doesn’t mention a specific timeline for the fix to be pushed out to users, though.
The response from Rahman was initially around 9 days ago, and another response from October 21 says the fix “should be available soon,” though still without any specific dates or times. What’s more, Rahman says the team is confident that a software update will fix the black level bug on affected Googlebooks, and that a hardware replacement won’t be necessary. He does reiterate that he has no timing to share, but that the team is working as quick as they can to get the update out to users as fast as possible. The update could be available for users to download by the end of the day.
