Better Safe Than Sorry
The Detroit Free Press just published a news item detailing an evacuation of a major Stellantis production plant. According to the report, the parent company had to issue an evacuation order for Jeep’s Northern Toledo production plant after a hazardous material spill in the city one mile from the assembly facility.
The City of Toledo released an official report saying the hazardous material spill came from the MC Tank Terminal late Tuesday evening after an explosion. The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department first issued an evacuation order for about 300 residents within a half-mile radius, then expanded it to a 1-mile radius around the incident site.

North Toledo Plant Evacuates, South Plant Closed
Jeep’s Toledo assembly facility is a vital site for the brand, where the Wrangler and Gladiator are built. The whole facility is split into 2 plants (north and south); the northern part is within the 1-mile radius, which is why it was evacuated. The city advised that everyone who lives and works within 1 mile of the spill should leave the area until further notice. However, people within 3 miles of the incident area should shelter in place with doors and windows closed. Officials also advised keeping all pets inside the house and shutting off ventilation systems that bring in outside air.
Jodi Tinson, a spokesperson for Stellantis, told the Detroit Free Press that the north plant was evacuated the night of October 20 after reports of the spill, and the first and second shifts on the 21st were canceled as well. Tinson also said the south plant was closed for the rest of the week. At the moment, it isn’t clear yet if this will affect production timelines and supply down the road. UAW President Kevin Gotinsky said the priority is to keep members and workers safe above all else, and that the union will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Glycidyl Methacrylate
The official report identifies the hazardous material as glycidyl methacrylate, a plastic additive. According to the report, glycidyl methacrylate is an irritant that can cause burning of the eyes, nose, mouth, and skin; those exposed are advised to shower or rinse the affected area immediately. People shouldn’t take exposure lightly; overexposure can cause headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting.
We’ve reached out to Stellantis and Jeep to verify the news and for an official statement. We’ll update this story once we receive a response.
