Location sharing in Google Messages is in for an update in the near future where it will add some functionality to the already existing capability to share where you are in real-time with people you’re having a chat with. The feature changes are currently in development at Google and will boost the location sharing option to include a few changes that include changing map styles.
Live location sharing, which is a feature that’s available in apps like Telegram and has been for years, was rolled out to Google Messages users earlier this year. Google began pushing out the feature in late March, and had steadily rolled it out to users over the following weeks. Now, Google is looking to expand on it by giving it a few more functions, though it isn’t made clear when these will officially be live for all users. Nor is it clear if Google plans to push these out in stages or region by region.
Google Messages live location sharing will get new map styles and traffic overlays
As reported by Android Authority, Google Messages is getting a new feature for live location sharing that lets you add traffic overlays to the map when you share your location. This way the person you’re sharing it with can see what the traffic is like on your trip to whatever destination is set for you to meet at. It also lets users change the map style to satellite or terrain layers, as opposed to just the standard map view that Google Maps shows by default. Which is currently the only option available.
According to Android Authority, it was able to get this feature to appear live in its version of the app. Users will be able to tap on a button to bring up a panel with the options for the map type and the map details, and tapping to select those will make those changes.
