Samsung’s Galaxy S27 lineup is shaping up to be a tale of two tiers. If you were hoping for a better selfie camera on the cheaper models, you may want to look at some of the best Android phones out today instead, because that upgrade is reportedly reserved for the pricier models.
According to SamMobile, citing a report from GalaxyClub, the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus will stick with the same 12MP autofocus selfie camera used on the Galaxy S26 series. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will get a new 16MP front-facing camera.
That’s a change from earlier reports, which suggested the entire Galaxy S27 series would get the upgraded selfie camera. It’s still unclear whether the 16MP sensor will be physically larger or switch to a square format, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro series. A square sensor would let you take landscape selfies without rotating your phone, which would be a really nice upgrade for group shots.
Samsung is drawing a clear line between the S27 models
The selfie camera isn’t the only place where the lineup splits. The Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus are expected to keep a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP 3x telephoto. That’s essentially the same setup Samsung has used for years now.
The Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra, on the other hand, reportedly get a 200MP main camera and a 50MP ultrawide. The Pro is expected to include a 12MP telephoto with 3x or 3.5x zoom, while the Ultra packs a 50MP 5x periscope telephoto.
The differences go beyond the cameras too. The Pro and Ultra are also rumored to get faster LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5 storage, and both are expected to use Qualcomm’s most powerful chip in some regions.
On paper, a 12MP selfie camera is fine for most people. But it’s hard to ignore the competition. The Pixel 11 Pro XL already packs a 42MP selfie camera. With the Galaxy S27 series also expected to cost more than last year, sticking with the same front camera is a tough sell.
Then again, this might be exactly what Samsung wants. With the new Galaxy S27 Pro sitting between the Plus and Ultra, Samsung needs reasons to push buyers up the ladder. Better cameras are an easy way to do that.
The Galaxy S27 series is expected to launch in early 2027, so there’s still time for plans to change.
