Your living room TV might soon get a major upgrade that lets you control your entire streaming setup without ever hunting for a lost remote. Google is reportedly working on a new, second-generation Google TV Streamer that blends set-top streaming with smart display smarts. While the unannounced box keeps the same sleek design as the current model, it shrinks into a slightly narrower footprint loaded with hands-free microphones and clever room-sensing features.
Hands-free voice commands and room awareness
A recent report from 9to5Google points out that this new model behaves a lot more like a Nest smart speaker than a plain streaming box. Instead of forcing you to hold down a voice button on your remote to talk to Gemini or Google Assistant, the new streamer adds built-in far-field microphones directly onto the console. Small cutouts across the top surface will let the device catch your “Hey Google” commands from clear across the room.
Alongside hands-free mics, Google is also introducing presence sensing. That means the streamer can tell when someone walks into the living room, automatically waking your TV screen to display ambient details like the local weather forecast, current time, or personal family photos from Google Photos.
It’s noteworthy that television brands like TCL have shipped similar room-sensing tech on select Google TV models. However, bringing it directly to a standalone streaming box means you can bring ambient smart display features to virtually any TV set.
Faster performance, extra storage, and remote tweaks
Under the hood, Google is giving the hardware some much-needed spec bumps. The upcoming streamer reportedly upgrades to a faster processor and expands internal storage beyond the 32GB found on today’s version, giving you plenty of room for heavy streaming apps and games.
Google is also tweaking the included remote control. It keeps the same comfortable shape and back-mounted Find My Remote button but adds two new shortcut buttons alongside the standard YouTube and Netflix keys. Google hasn’t officially shared pricing or launch dates yet—especially after raising the current model to $149.99—but if these leaks hold up, hands-free TV streaming is about to get a whole lot better.
