In September, the price of diesel hit a record price of $6.53. This was bad news for pickup truck owners running a business, but as summer ended, it hit freight trucking companies so hard that there was a series of bankruptcies. According to FreightWaves, the cost of fuel and a rise in general operating costs forced at least 16 carriers, ranging from small owner-operators to fleets operating dozens of trucks, into bankruptcy proceedings.
