Apple almost gave power users a massive memory boost for this hardware cycle. According to tech tipster Instant Digital on Weibo, Apple originally designed the iPhone 18 Pro and its first-ever foldable, the iPhone Duo, with 16GB of RAM before scrapping the plan and scaling back to 12GB.
Global DRAM shortages and rising component costs
The decision to stay at 12GB comes down to a harsh memory market. Soaring DRAM prices and global supply bottlenecks forced Apple to carefully calculate its bill of materials. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that rising memory costs were significant enough to spark internal discussions about bumping up the starting price of the foldable Duo.
Kuo similarly warned that industry-wide DRAM shortages were forcing Apple to scale back overall 2026 hardware shipment projections. South Korea’s The Bell previously noted that Samsung was contracted to supply 12GB LPDDR modules for the Duo, locking the foldable at the same ceiling as the Pro models rather than giving it an exclusive performance lead.
Manufacturing bottlenecks push iPhone Duo yield to 60%
Memory limits aren’t the only headache facing Apple’s hardware lineup. Recent reports suggest that final assembly yields for the iPhone Duo at Foxconn were hovering just above 60% heading into late September. Under Apple’s strict quality standards, getting factory lines tuned for a mature pass rate could take another six to twelve months.
The low pass rate stems from complex hardware components. Foxconn engineers have been constantly adjusting line equipment, while Samsung Display’s foldable OLED panels and 3D-printed titanium hinge parts faced delivery delays and design tweaks right before mass production.
Limited launch inventory for early buyers
Because of these assembly friction points, internal forecasts suggest Apple is targeting only 6 million to 8 million units of the iPhone Duo globally for 2026. This is a fraction of the 20 to 30 million units typically shipped for standard Pro models.
Counterpoint analyst Ivan Lam noted that early availability will depend entirely on how fast contract manufacturers can smooth out production lines. With pre-orders opening October 16 ahead of the October 23 release date, shoppers looking to pick up the foldable on day one should brace for limited initial stock and fast shipping delays.
