Google has been quietly tweaking Gemini all week, and the latest mobile updates bring two really neat tricks to your phone. The company is bringing a new interactive Map tool built right into the Gemini app, along with a much cleaner way to summon your favorite shortcuts and integrations on the fly.
How the new interactive Map tool works on mobile
As 9to5Google reports, the new Map feature is already popping up for most Android and iOS users worldwide. If you open the Gemini app on your phone, scroll all the way to the end of the bottom menu bar where Photos, Camera, and Files live. You will spot the new Map icon sitting right there.
Tapping it opens a live map view centered on where you are standing. You can pinch to zoom, drag the pin around, or use the search bar to pick an entirely different city. Once you pinpoint a spot and hit “Explore this area,” Gemini attaches a “Map Area” tag to your prompt box. From there, you can ask for local food spots, quick day trips, or neighborhood tips without having to type out long street names or coordinates.
Swapping forward slashes for the @ symbol
Google is also fixing one of the most annoying UI quirks in the app. If you are running the latest Google app beta (version 17.63), typing a forward slash (“/”) now brings up a quick message letting you know that shortcuts are officially shifting over to the “@” symbol.
Up until now, you had to remember whether a tool needed a slash or an @ symbol. Now, typing “@” pulls up one simple menu showing your custom Skills, shortcuts to build new ones, and all your active Connectors stacked neatly underneath.
The Map feature is already live for most phone users. Meanwhile, this new “@” shortcut setup is still rolling through beta testing and should reach everyone over the next few weeks.
