A More Expensive Type R
The Civic Type R might be history in some corners of the globe, but here in the US, the FL5 is still kicking – and Honda isn’t letting it coast. For 2027, the hot hatch gets a laundry list of updates, making it even sharper on the road and a bit friendlier for your daily grind.
But before you break out the confetti, let’s talk numbers. The Type R’s price jumps by $1,300 for 2027, with a new starting MSRP of $48,695. Factor in destination, and you’re looking at a $49,990 sticker.

That’s about a 2.7% hike over last year’s car. In exchange, Honda has thrown in updates everywhere – from the front end and suspension to the seats, infotainment, and safety tech.

Honda
More Aggressive Outside, Nicer Inside
Announced earlier this year, the changes are impossible to miss. Honda has given the fascia a bigger grille and a chunkier front splitter. These tweaks aren’t just for show – Honda claims the new airflow cuts turbulence, keeps the engine cooler, and adds real downforce when you’re pushing hard.
There is also a new Meteorite Gray Metallic exterior color, joining Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl, and Championship White.
Inside, things get a touch fancier. The signature red sport seats now have a new perforation pattern and, finally, three-stage heating. Ultrasuede wraps the upper dash and front doors, while the shift knob, console, and door handles get a stealthier dark gray finish. There’s even a standard auto-dimming rearview mirror now.

The Performance Changes Are More Subtle
Don’t expect more power, though. The turbocharged K20C still pumps out 315 horsepower, keeping the Type R at the top of Honda’s US performance heap. The engine is still built at Honda’s Anna Engine Plant in Ohio.
Instead, Honda zeroed in on how that power hits the pavement. The +R mode suspension gets new tuning to help the car hug the road, cut down on bounce and harshness, and stay planted through corners.
The Rev Match system is now quicker on downshifts, and a new yoke spring in the brake pedal cuts out slack for a firmer, more direct feel. These tweaks might seem minor, but they hit right where it counts for anyone who actually drives their car hard.

Honda
More Tech, Same Manual Formula
Tech fans, rejoice: the 2027 Type R gets a serious digital boost. Google built-in, Gemini, Maps, Play, and Alexa are all standard now, plus you get two USB-C ports. Honda Sensing gets an upgrade too, and Post-Collision Braking finally makes the cut as standard kit.
Honda says the 2027 Civic Type R hits US dealerships this month. It also marks 30 years of the Type R badge worldwide and a decade of the hot hatch in North America – a milestone worth celebrating.
