The Kia K4 is one of the best budget cars on sale right now. Not only does it look good, but it’s available with a turbocharged engine and plenty of tech for the class. None of this comes at a hefty price, as it’s one of the cheapest new cars on sale. That hasn’t changed for the 2027 model year, as Kia has implemented only modest price hikes across the K4 sedan and hatchback lineup. Is the Kia K4 the car to have in this segment, or should you consider the proven but aging Toyota Corolla instead?

Kia only made minor changes to the K4 for the new model year. For both the sedan and hatchback, the GT-Line Premium Package adds 18-inch black alloy wheels. On GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo sedan models, a new red interior with a Steel Gray exterior is now available.
Nothing else has changed, which means the Kia K4 still comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as standard, which makes 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. The available 1.6-liter turbo-four mill produces 190 hp and 195 lb-ft, and it also uses a conventional eight-speed automatic instead of the CVT paired with the base engine.
The K4 can be specified with some of the segment’s best features, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a power driver’s seat with a memory system, ventilated front seats, an AI voice assistant, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

Is The Corolla A Better Buy?

Toyota
The current Toyota Corolla has been around for much longer, so it doesn’t look or feel as modern as the edgy K4. However, its reliability reputation is unparalleled, and it starts at a reasonable $23,325 for 2027. That’s almost $1,000 more than the base Kia K4 sedan, though. At $24,780, the Corolla Hatchback is a little cheaper than the base K4 Hatchback, but the Toyota is not as well-equipped.
In base sedan form, both models have steel wheels and cloth upholstery. But the Kia’s standard 12.3-inch touchscreen dwarfs the Toyota’s eight-inch unit. The Corolla fights back with standard automatic climate control, whereas the base K4 has manual air-conditioning. The Toyota’s base 169-hp engine is more powerful, but both cars are rather sluggish. In the Corolla, expect up to 35 mpg combined, while the K4 gets up to 33 mpg.
A major advantage for the Corolla is the availability of an efficient hybrid, which manages up to 50 mpg combined. But if you want some performance, the Corolla has no answer to the Kia’s turbocharged engine option.
Practicality sees another win for the Kia, which has a much more spacious back seat and more cargo space, too.Â

Final Thoughts

Cole Attisha
The Kia K4 moves into the new model year without losing its high-value appeal. Compared with the Toyota Corolla, the K4 has a bolder look, better technology, more space, and better performance with its turbo engine. It also boasts a superior warranty and lower pricing.
But the Corolla is still a better option for buyers seeking proven reliability and maximum efficiency; in hybrid form, it’s one of the most economical sedans on sale. If those aspects matter to you, get the Corolla, but for everything else, the Kia K4 is a more impressive budget car.
