Google Messages is constantly improving. Recently, the app gained a new long-press menu that made accessing various chat actions easy for users. Well, it seems there’s more in the pipeline, as a fresh report suggests that Google Messages may be working on a feature that’ll make it easier to search within chat threads. Here are the details and a glimpse of it.
Google Messages could soon make it easier to search within chats
While digging through the latest version of the Google Messages beta (v20260921), folks at Android Authority have spotted evidence of this new feature. Additionally, they were even able to get it working on their test device. Currently, the search option is tucked away within the three-dot menu inside a thread. This means it requires a few extra taps than we’d like.
That might be changing soon. With the new feature, if you scroll up a bit in a message thread, Google Messages will understand that you’re likely trying to find something and surface a floating search icon at the top of the screen.
The feature is already working smoothly
Tapping it shows the search interface, where you can find messages or media files easily. The inspiration for this change seems to be coming from WhatsApp, which recently started rolling out (reportedly in beta) a similar feature. However, the small search icon here appears on the bottom right side when you scroll for older messages.
The report notes that the new search feature in Google Messages is already working smoothly. But it’s not clear when Google will roll this out to the public. When it does arrive, though, it might be in a phased manner, as it does most of the time. Hopefully, the waiting time is not too long. We will update when the rollout begins. So stay tuned for that.
