For quite a while now, Qualcomm has relied on TSMC to produce its chipsets. That relationship has been fruitful for both companies. But now, it looks like Qualcomm wants to branch out, and who might they be turning to? Speaking to reporters at the Snapdragon Summit 2026, Qualcomm confirmed it is working with Samsung on 2nm chips.
Qualcomm and Samsung working together on 2nm chips
Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Qualcomm might go back to Samsung for its 2nm chips. There was a report back in April that suggested Qualcomm might use Samsung’s foundries for its 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip. However, Qualcomm has since confirmed that both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Extreme Gen 6 are being made exclusively by TSMC. Samsung’s 2nm work with Qualcomm is instead aimed at future Snapdragon chips.
According to Qualcomm SVP and Head of Mobile Handsets, Chris Patrick, he was quoted as saying, “Qualcomm maintains a close partnership not only with TSMC but also with Samsung Foundry, and is conducting in-depth work regarding Samsung’s 2nm (nanometer, 1/1,000,000 m) process technology.”
He adds, “We are currently in the stage of understanding and evaluating how to apply Samsung’s 2nm technology to future products. Samsung Foundry is a long-standing core partner of Qualcomm and will remain an important partner in the future.”
Not surprising, really
That being said, it’s not surprising that Qualcomm and Samsung are working together again. Qualcomm initially ditched Samsung in 2022 over the yields of its chips, turning to TSMC instead. But now, it looks like both companies are back together once more.
We say we’re not surprised because Samsung’s semiconductor capabilities have grown since. It beat Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Apple to the punch with the 2nm Exynos 2600. Plus, TSMC is getting a lot more AI chip orders, which means that companies like Qualcomm need to diversify its supply chain or risk delayed product launches.
For now, it doesn’t look like Qualcomm is ready to drop TSMC and be exclusive with Samsung just yet. However, it’s still good news for Samsung given how many chips Qualcomm supplies.
