A long-standing assumption in the automotive world has been that performance and reliability are mutually exclusive. The thinking is, the more power you manage to extract from an engine, the harder you make a chassis work, and the more precisely all the components need to be tuned, the more time the vehicle will, in theory, spend in a workshop as opposed to in your driveway. To be fair, this assumption has held up reasonably well for decades, and there are a number of V8 SUV models for whom this may still be a reality, like the Maserati Levante Trofeo. However, in 2026, the data presents a more nuanced story, with a number of fast SUVs having become some of the more dependable vehicles in the premium market; the BMW X6 is a prime example of this.
