If you picked up a brand-new iPhone 18 Pro Max in the US expecting to try out Apple’s shiny new in-house C2 cellular modem, you are in for a surprise. While Apple spent plenty of time talking up its custom silicon during the launch event, a fresh teardown by research firm TechInsights reconfirms that the American version of the Pro Max is actually running on Qualcomm hardware under the hood.
Inside the device, engineers found Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SDX80M 5G (X80) modem. This is the exact same chip used across the iPhone 17 lineup. What makes this hardware choice strange is how hyper-specific it is. If you buy the smaller iPhone 18 Pro in the US, or if you purchase the iPhone 18 Pro Max in Canada, the UK, France, or India, you get Apple’s custom C2 chip.
How Apple hinted at the hardware split in its spec sheet
Eagle-eyed buyers could actually spot this difference before taking the phone apart. On Apple’s US tech specs page, the “Apple C2 cellular modem” is listed under the smaller iPhone 18 Pro column. However, the space under the Pro Max column is left completely blank. Overseas comparison pages, by contrast, list the C2 modem for both devices.
Beyond the modem mystery, the TechInsights teardown highlights Apple’s usual high-end internal layout. The board houses the new A20 Pro chip alongside Apple’s custom N1 wireless module for Wi-Fi. It also features companion components from key suppliers, including Skyworks, Broadcom, Qorvo, Texas Instruments, and an NXP NFC controller.
The long road to cutting ties with Qualcomm
This regional exception is likely down to business logistics rather than technical issues. Apple extended its supply contract with Qualcomm back in 2023, and fulfilling minimum order quotas for its largest market makes financial sense while ramping up global production for the C2 modem.
The new C2 chip brings major upgrades over earlier designs like the C1 (found in the iPhone 16e) and C1X (used in the iPhone Air and 17e). It offers AI-enabled connectivity, faster uploads, 15% less power and complete 5G mmWave support.
Overall, Apple is clearly nearing the end of its move away from third-party modems, with the C2 now powering both the standard iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo.
