If you recently tried setting up third-party streaming tools on your Amazon Fire TV only to find the option completely gone, you were not alone. Over the past month, Fire TV owners noticed that popular installer tools like AFTVnews’s Downloader app suddenly vanished from the “Install unknown apps” settings menu. Without those permissions, installing outside software became impossible, prompting widespread fears that Amazon was quietly ending app sideloading.
As it turns out, the whole situation was simply an unintended glitch.
What actually broke the settings menu?
The panic started shortly after Amazon launched new Fire TV hardware running its proprietary, Linux-based Vega OS. If you are not aware, the latter is an operating system designed without Android app sideloading support. When older Android-based Fire TV devices suddenly stopped granting installation permissions around the same time, cord-cutters assumed Amazon was aligning all of its previous hardware under the same strict rules.
However, Amazon cleared up the confusion in a statement to AFTVnews. The firm confirmed that a recent system update accidentally broke the permission interface.
“There was a bug in a recent Fire TV Settings update that caused the ‘Install unknown apps’ list to appear incomplete or empty on some Fire TV devices,” an Amazon spokesperson explained. The company noted that it has already identified the underlying cause and is deploying an automatic fix.
How to get the fix on your device
The patch is rolling out automatically as a component update over the coming week. This means affected devices will quietly repair themselves in the background. Because component patches update system apps rather than the entire operating system, your core Fire OS version number will likely stay the same after the fix installs.
If you want to speed up the process manually, you can navigate to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for updates to trigger the download.
It’s worth noting that future Vega OS hardware will lack sideloading capabilities. However, existing Android-based Fire TV sticks will continue supporting third-party APKs once the update reaches your device.
