Honor is getting ready to drop its next flagship lineup, and the company is bringing some genuine hardware surprises to the mobile camera space. Ahead of its official September launch, official teasers have confirmed that the upcoming Honor Magic 9 series will introduce Android’s first 55MP square selfie camera.
Why a square selfie camera actually makes sense
The new front-facing sensor—branded as the “Agile Eye”—uses a 1:1 square aspect ratio instead of traditional rectangular smartphone camera sensors.
The logic behind putting a square sensor on the front of a phone comes down to framing flexibility. Instead of forcing you to physically turn your phone sideways to capture a landscape shot, the square format captures a wide field of view that gives the software plenty of room to crop images or video into either vertical or horizontal formats.
This design choice addresses a common hassle for mobile creators who produce content for platforms with different orientation requirements. Official footnotes confirm that the 55MP Agile Eye sensor will be exclusive to the base Magic 9 and the higher-end Magic 9 Pro Max models. The confirmation settles earlier prototype rumors that suggested a 100MP unit.
Dual 200MP sensors and ARRI cinema tools
The front camera is only one piece of Honor’s broader imaging strategy for the Magic 9 line. On the back, the flagship devices will feature a reworked camera module inspired by the classic ARRIFLEX 35 cinema camera.
The rear setup packs dual 200MP cameras developed in direct collaboration with German camera manufacturer ARRI. Users will also get access to dedicated ARRI Cinema Mode features, including LogC3 support, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 color profiles, and the ARRI Look Library. There’s also an optional 500mm teleconverter attachment for extreme zoom capabilities.
Leaks point to a monster 11,000mAh battery variant
Honor focuses its official teasers on photography. However, supply chain leaks on Weibo suggest the lineup might hold an even bigger hardware surprise. Reports indicate that alongside the standard Magic 9 and metal-bodied Magic 9 Pro Max, Honor is preparing a third model called the Magic 9 Super Edition (via GSMArena).
This leaked Super Edition reportedly packs an eye-popping 11,000mAh battery, a built-in active cooling fan, a 165Hz display, and a fiberglass body powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor. Meanwhile, the standard Magic 9 is expected to carry an 8,000mAh battery, while the Pro Max sits at 8,800mAh.
Pre-orders are already open on Honor’s official store in China. Still, full pricing and global availability details for the Magic 9 series will arrive during the formal product launch event on September 28.
