Apple is apparently paying Samsung around $250 per iPhone Duo for the inner folding display. This is according to Weibo user Momentary Digital, who also claims that Samsung Display has signed a three-year exclusive supply agreement with Apple for the iPhone Duo.
We’ve known for a while that Samsung was supplying Apple’s foldable displays for the iPhone Duo, but what we’re seeing now is just how much Apple is paying per panel, which does seem to be quite a bit. Remember that this is the M16 OLED, Samsung’s latest panel.
At this price, the inner display is one of the most expensive core components of the entire phone. This makes a lot of sense and is typical for other foldables. Keep in mind that Apple uses 10 layers in this display, including the nano-texture layer.
Apple has been sourcing parts for its products from Samsung for years — many, many years. Particularly for its mobile devices, while Apple sources from Sharp, BOE, and LG Display for its MacBook and iMac displays.
This is big for Samsung Display, especially given that the iPhone Duo is expected to overtake the foldable market and become the number one foldable within a year.
Glowing reviews of iPhone Duo coming out of Apple Park this week
Following the announcement of the iPhone Duo this week, we’ve seen plenty of glowing early reviews from those who were invited to the event. Many are excited about the size, while many more are impressed by the crease. While it’s not 100% gone, it is the most invisible crease on a foldable so far. A big reason for that is the nano-texture display that Apple has used. This is the same nano-texture layer that is offered on its MacBook Pros as well.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo don’t open until October 16, so you have about a month to decide whether you want to pick one up.
