
When it comes to chipsets, there are a few companies out there that each have their own lineup. There’s Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung, and Google, just to name a few. While each company has its own tech, they do rely on Arm not only for the design of CPUs and GPUs, but also license the underlying instructions. Now, Arm’s new mobile chip could change the future of our smartphones.
Meet Arm’s new mobile chip
Starting with Arm’s new mobile chip is the GPU. This comes in the form of the Mali G2-Ultra NX. It’s the first Mali chip to build neural accelerators directly into its shader cores instead of attaching them on separately. This means that when it comes to AI-driven graphics work, like upscaling and frame generation, it now runs alongside regular rendering using the same memory and cache systems.Â
According to Arm, that setup delivers up to 4x higher performance per watt for neural graphics tasks. Traditional, non-AI game performance also gets a 14% boost over the last generation. There’s a new ray tracing unit too for richer lighting and shadows.
On the CPU side, Arm built a cluster combining the C2-Ultra. The company says this is its most powerful mobile CPU yet with efficiency-focused C2-Pro cores. There are two SME2 units that handle on-device AI. Arm says the C2-Ultra delivers up to 1.7x higher AI performance than last year’s C1-Ultra.Â
Single-thread speed will see an improvement of about 15%. It also uses 38% less power. The doubling of the SME2 capacity is meant to speed up small language models running locally by as much as 70%.
What does this mean for you?
As a consumer, these numbers probably won’t mean that much to you. However, once chipmakers start adopting these new technologies from Arm, that’s when you might notice the differences.
For instance, mobile games could hit noticeably higher frame rates. Arm says gamers might be able to get up to 120 FPS. AI features that currently lean on cloud servers could run more of that work locally instead.
It is unclear which chipmakers will be adopting these changes. However, MediaTek and Samsung are more directly tied to Arm compared to Qualcomm. So it is possible MediaTek’s upcoming Dimensity 9600 could be the first to showcase these improvements.
