Huawei has just announced its new tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design. This is, technically, the company’s third tri-fold. The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design arrived in 2024, while the Mate XTs Ultimate Design followed in 2025.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 is the first major successor to the Mate XT, though. The Mate XTs was more of a 1.5 update, in a way. In any case, the device has just been announced in China, and it is notably different than the first two phones.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design is here and it offers a different folding mechanism
Huawei has opted to adopt a folding mechanism more similar to what the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold offered. It includes two displays, not just one. One display is on the back, and when the phone is folded, that is the only available panel.
The benefit of this design is that the main display is completely protected when the phone is folded. The tradeoff is that you cannot fold the phone halfway and use a near-8-inch panel. You only get two to choose from.
Having said that, you’ll notice that there is Huawei’s octagon camera design on the back. Three cameras are included in there, while that camera setup does protrude quite a bit. That’s not surprising, as this phone is immensely thin.
It’s thinner than its predecessors
Speaking of which, the device is only 3.5mm thick when unfolded. When folded, it’s 12.3mm thick, which is great considering this is a tri-fold smartphone. It is 157.2mm tall, and when folded, 77mm wide. When unfolded, its width is 219.2mm. The Mate XT 2 weighs 299 grams.

Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro processor fuels this smartphone. The Maleoon GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing is also a part of the package. All models of the device include 16GB of RAM, while 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB models were announced. Do note that one of 1TB models will have a privacy display feature. Two different ones have been announced. The 2TB model also has that feature.
A 10.2-inch 3K foldable panel with UTG is the star of the show
The main display on the phone is a 10.2-inch 3K foldable panel with UTG glass on top. The cover panel measures 6.5 inches, and its brightness goes up to 6,500 nits. The resolution on the main display is 2232 x 3184, while the cover display offers a resolution of 2442 x 1140 pixels.
Both panels are LTPO OLED panels and offer a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. A 300Hz touch sampling rate is offered on the cover display, while the main display has a 240Hz touch sampling rate.
HarmonyOS 7.0 comes pre-installed on the device. A 5,600mAh battery is also a part of the package. 66W Super Fast wired charging is on offer here, along with 50W Super Fast wireless charging.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design is IP58 and IP59 certified, by the way. It has eSIM support, while it also supports Bluetooth 6.0. Satellite calling is also a part of the package.
The main camera has a variable aperture
What about the cameras? There are three of them on the back. A 50-megapixel main camera offers a variable aperture of f/1.49-f/4.0. OIS is supported here, and we’re looking at a RYYB sensor with a 1/1.28-inch sensor size.

There is also a 40-megapixel ultrawide camera included with an f/2.2 aperture, and it’s also a RYYB sensor. The third camera on the back is a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto unit with an f/2.2 aperture, RYYB sensor, and OIS. It also supports 3.5x optical zoom, 7x optical quality zoom, and 100x digital zoom.
An 8-megapixel camera is located on both the main and cover displays. Both of those cameras offer an f/2.4 aperture lens, and they’re identical, it seems.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design is very pricey
The pricing for the Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design starts at CNY19,999 ($2,980) for the 16GB RAM model with 256GB of storage. The 1TB model with 16GB of RAM and a privacy screen will set you back CNY24,999 ($3,725). Needless to say, it’s quite expensive.
The phone was announced in China, and we still don’t have any information regarding its global launch. It is expected to arrive to global markets, though. If it does, it will be even more expensive than in China.
