Too Many, Too Quickly
We’ve literally just written and published a report in which domestic safety regulators in China have warned that the increasing pace of automakers’ R&D has become a cause for concern with regard to overall vehicle quality and safety. Regulators are looking to impose stricter testing and quality control measures in the coming months to address their concerns.
Now it seems the issues don’t just affect safety; with the spotlight now on the rapid pace of the local industry, more people are speaking out. The most recent issue now affects the new energy vehicles’ battery packs, with some apparently experiencing “batch failure.”

Batch Failure
Car News China reported that people are concerned about China’s compressed vehicle development timelines and price wars, which are directly affecting battery quality in the domestic market. This comes after Chairman Robin Zeng of Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) gave a keynote address during the 2026 World Power Battery Conference.
Zeng backed up his claims with numbers, saying that in 2026 alone China launched 600 new vehicle models, which roughly averages to a staggering 3 new car launches per day. He goes on to say that the pace has contributed to several battery-powered models experiencing what is called batch failures, where all cars are affected. He did not, however, go into detail as to which brands were affected by the battery failures.

A Matter Of Scale
While the issue seems to be domestic for now, it needs to be taken into account that China represents 70% of the global battery installation volume. This means that even a small percentage of defects could still relate to high numbers of vehicles, especially from Chinese manufacturers.
There have been recent cases where battery quality has become national news in China. Back in 2025, Geely sued battery maker Sunwoda, alleging quality defects in cells supplied between June 2021 and December 2023. In July of this year, defective battery cells put into 213,000 GAC Aion vehicles resulted in battery swelling, power loss, and failures.
