TCL’s NxtPaper phones are now finally embracing OLED tech with the P80 Ultra, after years of featuring LCD panels. The company introduced the NxtPaper brand several years ago, and the technology has continued to improve and become more central to the TCL experience. The company, at IFA 2026, is now launching three new phones, the TCL P80, P80 Pro, and P80 Ultra. Here’s what’s on offer.
TCL P80 Ultra introduces the first OLED-based NxtPaper display
TCL first revealed its OLED NxtPaper technology at MWC in March this year. However, there were no products taking advantage of it back then. The new P80 Ultra is the first. Just like the LCD models, the TCL P80 Ultra can switch to a low-power, monochromatic display mode that replicates the look of paper when you’d like to read or have no distractions.
As for the specs, the TCL P80 Ultra sports a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with NxtPaper technology. It aims to offer a paper-like comfort in any ambient light conditions. It gets a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The display offers 100% DCI-P3 coverage and can reach a peak brightness of 3,200 nits. TCL notes the Nano Crystal Shield Glass is the best anti-glare solution on the market.
Dimensity 7400 Elite, 5,800mAh battery, and an IP68 rating
The handset features the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite, paired with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It packs a 5,800mAh battery with 45W fast charging support. As for cameras, there’s a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 50MP 3x periscope lens with OIS, and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens. It offers a 32MP sensor on the front for selfies.
There’s also an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, and it passed MIL-STD-810H shock tests. The company is promising four years of OS updates and seven years of security patches. The OS offers an AI-enhanced Reading, which can turn a regular e-book into an audiobook that you can listen to.
All NxtPaper phones have a NxtPaper slider that can be used to switch to your preferred e-reader mode. There’s Max Ink mode. It can turn the phone into more like an e-reader, killing all notifications (except for calls and texts). This helps extend battery life for up to seven days of reading or up to 26 days on standby. It also gives quick access to the e-reader app, which comes pre-loaded with more than 500 books to get you started.
TCL P80 and P80 Pro are also launching
Joining the P80 Ultra are the P80 and P80 Pro. The latter also features almost the same specs. But it only has dual rear cameras, including a 50MP main and an 8MP ultrawide. No telephoto lens. The rest is the same as the P80 Ultra. Then there’s the regular TCL P80. It keeps the OLED display, but omits the NxtPaper technology. You get the same 6.83-inch display, a 120Hz refresh rate, and 3,200 nits peak brightness.
The base storage on this model is 128GB, and the maximum configuration is 256GB. It also houses a smaller 5,000mAh battery. All three phones run on Android 16 OS out of the box. The vanilla model gets three OS updates and seven years of security support.
Prices
The phones are launching in Europe today, i.e., September 3. As for the price, the TCL P80 Ultra starts at €549 for the base 8/256GB model; the P80 Pro will cost €429; and lastly, the P80 starts at €349.
