The United States Department of Defense is giving its internal digital toolkit a massive upgrade. The Pentagon has officially rolled out customized versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, making specialized generative AI models available to its 3 million civilian and military personnel.
These new tools—dubbed ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government—are now integrated into GenAI.mil. The latter is a secure centralized portal launched in December last year. The platform originally debuted with a hardened version of Google Gemini and has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users. By hosting these models in an isolated environment, defense staff can handle routine tasks without worrying about delivering sensitive government data for commercial training.
Specialized tools for administrative and operational tasks
The new additions divide responsibilities based on daily workflow needs. Built through the OpenAI for Government initiative, ChatGPT Mil serves as a scaled-up assistant for document-heavy, unclassified tasks. Defense personnel can use it to draft policies, analyze complex files, coordinate administrative planning, and set up persistent project workspaces.
On the operational side, Grok for Government arrives via SpaceX’s Starshield AI network to boost productivity across diverse operational contexts. The system equips logisticians and acquisition professionals with deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning modes, and reusable playbooks. These tools aim to preserve institutional knowledge. In fact, Chief Digital and AI Officer Cameron Stanley noted in a court filing earlier this year that Grok previously assisted U.S. forces in deploying over 2,000 munitions to targets within 96 hours during the conflict in Iran.
High adoption and the shifting vendor landscape
Bringing these custom models onboard marks a broader push to integrate commercial technology. It is a joint work with partners like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI. Civil agencies are also getting in on the action. A General Services Administration deal offering Grok models for just 42 cents through March 2027.
These Pentagon custom ChatGPT Grok models also signal a major shift in government tech partnerships. The rollout follows intense friction with Anthropic, which the Pentagon briefly labeled a supply chain risk after the firm refused to allow its Claude model to power autonomous weapons or surveillance.
After a federal judge struck down that designation as illegal, Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael confirmed the department would finalize removing Anthropic platforms by late September. By securing tailored agreements with OpenAI and xAI instead, the Department of Defense gets modern productivity tools while keeping full control over data security.
