The very first Android smartphone with a square selfie camera sensor is on its way. The device will become official later this month, and a well-known tipster just confirmed the information.
The very first Android phone with a square selfie camera is coming this month
The info comes from Digital Chat Station, who says that the HONOR Magic9 Pro will become the first Android phone with such a sensor. As a reminder, Apple debuted such a selfie camera with the iPhone 17 series last year.
In case you’re wondering what is the benefit of a square selfie camera sensor when compared to a regular one, well… there is one. Such a sensor allows you to take pictures and videos in portrait or landscape orientation without rotating your phone.
The iPhone 17 series debuted such a selfie camera sensor last year
The phone essentially captures a larger image area (square), and then uses software to crop the final photo or video in real-time. It works well on the iPhone 17 series, and more phones are expected to start using such a sensor.
At this point in time, we do know that the HONOR Magic9 series will arrive in September, but we don’t know when. We’re also talking about a China launch here; the global variants will likely be a bit late.
Considering that HONOR is expected to use the yet-unannounced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chip inside the Magic9 Pro, we’re guessing that the phone will arrive after September 22. Why? Well, that’s when the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series chips will become official.
The HONOR Magic9 Pro, aside from using the square selfie camera, is tipped to utilize a 200-megapixel main camera on the back. That will be a 1/1.28-inch sensor size with an f/1.57 aperture lens, and a 3-degree OIS.
A 50-megapixel ultrawide camera is also tipped, along with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto unit (1/1.4-inch sensor size). ARRI videography features are also expected on the device.
More Android devices with a square selfie camera are expected in October
As a reminder, the OPPO Find X10 series could also include a square camera sensor. Those devices are set to arrive in October, though.
