In the world of AI, many publications are losing traffic because AI is giving people the answers they’re looking for without them having to click through to their websites. Google is trying to help mitigate this traffic loss by letting you add your favorite news sources to search.
This was already a feature in Google News; you’ve likely seen the button on our website and many other news sites, allowing you to add us as a preferred source in Google News. Now, it is being added to Search, Top Stories, AI Overviews, and even AI mode.
Now, when you search for news on a topic, you’ll get the sources that you prefer. So, if you don’t want to hear anything from Fox News, but would like to see news from CNN, you can mark it as a favorite news source.
Google has been facing pressure from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, and in June it announced that it would begin allowing websites to opt out of appearing in AI-generated search results. This is one such step, though how much it helps will remain to be seen.
Google is also bringing Gemini to Discover, because of course it is
Additionally, Gemini is coming to your Discover Feed. You will be able to converse with Gemini in your Discover feed, and Google says that “your feed will adjust on the fly, and remember your requests.”
Google is also making it easier to listen to the news rather than reading it. You can customize these audio briefings through the News app on Android.
As usual, these updates are slowly rolling out from Google, so they may not be available today, but they will be in the very near future. These are actually some really great updates for Search and the Discover feed, even if it does mean Gemini is in even more places now.
