Google Home is getting another major update, marking an expansion of support for more smart locks. Google’s smart home platform is consistently improving, with the latest version focusing on smart locks and other minor fixes.
Google Home’s smart lock support is getting a major expansion
In its release notes, Google posted the latest changes on the Google Home and Nest Help forum. The latest round of changes brings better support for European-style smart locks, also known as mortise locks. They feature both a locking bolt and a latch, and some smart models let you control them separately. Google Home can now use this independent control and more clearly tell you the lock’s status. Like whether it is “Unlocked and latched.”
A bug that limited live camera feeds to 360p resolution has also been fixed. In addition, you’ll now see a clear alert in the Google Home app if your payment for a paid Google Home subscription fails. The company notes this will make it easy to update your billing info before you lose your camera history or other features.
A handful of minor fixes
Besides these, this month’s update also brought a handful of more minor fixes and improvements. Google says temperatures across the app, voice commands, and Google Nest devices will now match your preferred temperature unit (Celsius or Fahrenheit). You can change your preferred unit in the settings of the Google Home app.
iOS users are also receiving a handful of fixes. Firstly, there’s a fix for a Google Home bug that caused half-degree thermostat temperatures (such as 76.5 degrees F) to round down to whole numbers on thermostat screens. The Google Home app should now experience fewer camera-related crashes.
Camera playback controls, such as settings and exit buttons, will now remain visible when viewing a camera that is offline or experiencing a connection issue. This should “make it easy to troubleshoot or navigate away.” All these changes are now live in the Google Home app.
