Google made a big deal about pushing RCS onto Android devices. The company even pressured Apple to adopt the standard. But now, it seems that there’s a Google Messages RCS bug that is causing the feature to not work on newer Android devices.
Google Messages RCS bug
According to this post on Reddit, the user switched from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 to the Fold 8. On their Fold 6, RCS was working just fine. But after they switched, they encountered a bug that caused Google Messages RCS to stop working.
The user claims to have tried a bunch of different methods to fix it. This includes turning airplane mode on and deleting their cache and data, uninstall all updates to Google Messages, call their carrier for a new eSIM, disabling RCS, and even submitted feedback to Google. Unfortunately, none of this worked.
They’re also not alone. There’s another Reddit post with another Fold 8 user claiming that RCS is not working for them either. The Google Help Community account has chimed in on both posts to offer some support, but it doesn’t seem to have helped. If you’ve run into this issue yourself, don’t worry, there seems to be a workaround.
How to fix this issue
In a comment from Redditor starcowboy26, they came up with a solution that seems to have fixed the problem. They said that they went through the same troubleshooting techniques, called their carrier, and spent hours trying to get it resolved, but none of it worked until they did this.
According to the post, users should first disable RCS. Next, they need to connect to a VPN server located in Paris, France. While connected, turn RCS back on. By now, users should be able to connect with RCS services. After that, they can disable VPN.
Judging by the comments and replies to their post, it seems to work. For some reason connecting to a VPN in Paris, France addresses this weird Google Messages RCS bug. We can’t really explain why that works. They’re not taking full credit for that fix. According to the user, this is based on another comment from the same problem from a year ago.
We can’t say for sure if that method works since we haven’t encountered the problem ourselves. But it might be worth a shot if you find yourself in that situation.
