Comcast is taking home protection more seriously as it has now unveiled a new platform called Xfinity Shield, which puts Wi-Fi at the center of the setup. The company claims this to be a “first-of-its-kind platform” for intelligent home protection. This is designed to bring home, family, and cybersecurity protection together in a single app. The system uses the company’s existing Wi-Fi network to offer features like motion detection, security alerts, and protection for connected devices.
Comcast introduces a Wi-Fi-powered home protection setup with Xfinity Shield
At the heart of Xfinity Shield is the Wi-Fi Shield service. This is being offered to Xfinity Internet users at no extra cost. It delivers three layers of protection built into the Wi-Fi experience. One among them is Wi-Fi Motion, which can detect movement inside the home by monitoring changes in the radio frequency signal between the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices.
It’s an opt-in feature that can send alerts through the Xfinity app when it detects unexpected movement. Comcast says Wi-Fi Motion uses Xfinity Gateway technology to detect activity without recording videos, taking pictures, or identifying people.
Available to Xfinity Internet customers
Wi-Fi Shield also includes Xfinity CyberSecure cybersecurity features that help protect connected devices from malware, phishing, and other threats. It also brings Family Settings into the same app, letting users create profiles for members of the household, assign devices, and manage things like screen time and device limits. You can also set Wi-Fi Shield to work in three modes based on whether you’re home, away, or asleep.
There’s also a paid option called Shield Select for those seeking an additional layer of protection. For $15 a month, it adds an indoor camera, a door or window sensor, and cloud video storage. There’s also 24/7 emergency response that you can access with a button tap. It brings the option to identify people, pets, packages, and vehicles to AI-powered cameras.
Comcast also plans to expand Xfinity Shield with more features and services next year. The platform is now available to Xfinity customers.
