Apple still owns the wearable market, but Samsung has another competitor to worry about – Garmin.
Omdia just released its report on the global smartwatch market, showing Apple has lost a tiny bit of its huge lead. Now down to 46%, versus 48% during the same period last year. But, second-place is a tie between Garmin and Samsung. Garmin has climbed, while Samsung has dropped a tiny bit, and unsurprisingly, Huawei is in 4th place at 7%.
Let’s start off with Huawei. They have really been taking off with wearables over the past decade; despite all of the troubles Huawei has had in the West, their wearables are still a huge market in Europe. Apple, well, it’s the Apple Watch. As long as the iPhone is big, the Apple Watch will be big. There’s really no other way to explain it.
More consumers are choosing Garmin for accuracy.
Garmin’s products are typically more expensive than Samsung’s, though Garmin does have a ton of smartwatches to choose from. Not to mention the new Garmin Cirqa, which was announced a few weeks ago as a competitor to the WHOOP and Fitbit Air.
Where Garmin exceeds Samsung, even though, is in accuracy. Garmin has been called “the runner’s watch” for years, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only are its metrics generally far more accurate, but its GPS is also better for outdoor runs. That’s not a surprise, considering Garmin was a GPS company for a long time. You might even remember having a Garmin GPS in your car a good 20+ years ago.
Samsung just launched the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, which offer much better performance, partly thanks to the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip inside. But Garmin still has a leg up here with weeks-long battery life on most of its watches.
