Google’s Pixel phones could finally get a feature that users have been requesting for years. We’re talking about the double-tap-to-lock feature, as it has been spotted in the latest software build.
Google could finally add a double-tap-to-lock feature to its Pixel smartphones
This feature would allow you to turn off the phone’s screen and lock it without tapping the power button. It’s kind of self-explanatory, but you’d be able to double-tap on an empty space on your homescreen in order to get the job done.
This feature has been a part of many third-party skins over the years, and it currently is. Almost every single main Chinese smartphone OEM is offering this feature, and so does Samsung. Google has been resisting it for a long time, for whatever reason.
Well, according to strings spotted by Android Authority in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 build, the feature is in the works. This is also not the first time it was spotted; it was spotted on the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 build back in June 2025.
This feature was expected to arrive back in 2025, but it did not
Everyone was hoping that it would be arriving back then, with Android 16, but it did not. It was also not included in the initial Android 17 build, so now we’re hoping the third time’s the charm.
Google updated some dormant strings related to the double-tap-to-sleep feature, which signals that the company has upcoming plans for the feature. Google added the ‘Home’ in the description for the feature. Google also added or updated strings that point to a dedicated settings page for the feature.

The point here is that Google is finally making moves regarding this feature. It’s in the company’s plans, considering that it is being tinkered with, so we could finally end up getting it in the near future.
