As the performance SUV/crossover segment began to grow in the early 2010s, BMW’s entry debuted in the 2010 model year, taking the form of the BMW X5 M. Based on the German brand’s midsize SUV, the BMW X5, the high-performance models received a better grade of engine, chassis, and aesthetic appearance over the standard X5 models under BMW’s M Division.
